Between June 29th and July 2nd 2008, writers, translators and scholars will gather for a manifestation of the value of words and in support of human rights.
WALTIC is a global arena for collaboration, creating opinion and achieving change.
2 July: The first ever WALTIC concludes today
WALTIC, the literary world congress, is ending today. During the past three days, 600 authors and scholars, translators and activists, from a total of 90 countries, have gathered to manifest the value of words. At the time of writing, 358 people have signed the WALTIC resolution to increase literacy, safeguard freedom of speech and strengthen authors’ rights. The Swedish Writers’ Union is now planning a new congress for 2010.
30 June: The WALTIC 2008 Resolution
Today, in conjunction with the opening of the literary world congress, WALTIC presents three proposals with the aim of increasing literacy, safeguarding freedom of expression and strengthening authors' rights. President of the Swedish Writers' Union Mats Söderlund is also criticizing the cultural policy of the Swedish Government, which he claims is more or less blind to the crucial role of literature for social development.
