Instructions for authors

The Scientific Committee invites you to submit abstracts for the 18th ISSTDR, in conjunction with BASHH.

Submitted abstracts should include unpublished data.

Confirmation of receipt
On receipt of your abstract you will be sent an email to confirm that your abstract has been received. If you do not receive a confirmation within one week of submitting your abstract, please contact the Congress Secretariat on

Abstract Presentations

All abstracts will be anonymously reviewed and scored for originality, quality of data, presentation and significance. Full presentation specifications will be available on the Congress website and will also be forwarded after abstract acceptance.

Presentation Categories

Accepted abstracts will be allocated on merit to the appropriate presentation category by the review committee: oral scientific presentation or poster. Presenting authors may however indicate what presentation type they prefer. 

Oral Scientific Presentations

Presenters will be allocated a total of 15 minutes for their presentation INCLUDING time for questions. PowerPoint presentation facilities will be provided for speakers.  No facilities for slides, video or overhead transparencies will be available at the Congress.

Poster presentations

Poster presentations will be themed as for the programme sessions.

Submission of Abstracts

Please note:

  • Authors are NOT given the option to specify presentation format, but may indicate their preference.
  • Only registered delegates may present abstracts.
  • Abstracts will only be considered if submitted in English.
  • Abstracts are not edited by the organisers and author corrections will NOT be accepted after final submission. Abstracts should therefore be checked carefully for accuracy prior to submission.
  • You should indicate two topics from the list that best suits your paper. The topics are used by the Scientific Committee to place abstracts in the most appropriate sessions.
  • Authors’ names should be provided in the format ‘A. Smith’.  The submitting author should be the presenting author.
  • The title should be a maximum of 150 characters, typed in CAPITAL LETTERS.
  • The abstract may be a maximum of 2000 characters (approximately 250 words) including spaces. 
  • The abstract should be structured using the following headings: Background or Objectives, Methods, Results and Conclusions.
  • The abstract should be as informative as possible and;
  • mention statistical methods where appropriate,
  • ONE table may be included but no photographs, figures or references,
  • statements such as “results will be discussed” or “data will be presented” will not be accepted,
  • non-standard abbreviations should be described in full when first mentioned followed by the abbreviation in parentheses,
  • the names of authors, names of hospitals, medical schools or clinics are not to be mentioned in the title or text of the abstract.

Reproduction of Accepted Abstracts

Abstracts that have been accepted for presentation will be published in the final programme which will be available to all delegates onsite.

Notification of Accepted Abstracts

You will be notified whether your abstract has been accepted at the end of March 2009.  At that time you will be given full details of the timing of your presentation.

Registration

Abstracts CANNOT be published or included in the programme unless the appropriate registration fee has been received.  Registrations which are unpaid at the time of program compilation 25th May 2009 will be withdrawn. Similarly poster presentations which remain unpaid at the advance print deadline of 29th April 2009 will be withdrawn without further notice. A discounted registration fee is available on or before the 22nd April 2009 and is available to any authors who submit abstracts.  After 22nd April 2009, the standard registration fees will apply.  Authors requiring abstract acceptance to attend the meeting should note that registration fees are refundable in case of abstract rejection minus a small administration fee of 20% of the registration fee.
